NAD+ Supplementation for Athletic Recovery and Energy

By Dr. Brandon Bright, DAOM, LAc · Tustin, CA · Updated June 5, 2026

NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme central to cellular energy production, mitochondrial function, and muscle recovery. Athletes and active individuals using NAD+ supplementation report improved recovery times, sustained energy, and reduced fatigue.

How NAD+ Supports Athletic Performance

Energy production: NAD+ is essential for ATP (energy) production in mitochondria. Higher NAD+ availability means more efficient energy conversion during and after exercise.

Muscle recovery: NAD+-dependent enzymes (sirtuins, PARPs) regulate muscle repair, mitochondrial biogenesis, and stress response. This is why NAD+ precursors are popular in longevity protocols.

Lactate clearance: NAD+ is required for converting lactate back to glucose (gluconeogenesis), reducing muscle soreness post-workout.

Mitochondrial health: NAD+ activates PGC-1α, the master regulator of mitochondrial function. Better mitochondria equals better endurance and recovery.

NAD+ Precursors for Athletes

NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide): Directly converted to NAD+. Crosses cell membranes efficiently. 250–500mg daily typical for athletes. Evidence: improved endurance in mice; human trials ongoing.

NR (Nicotinamide Riboside): Also converts to NAD+. Slightly slower absorption than NMN. 500–1,000mg daily typical. Evidence base similar to NMN.

Niacin (Vitamin B3): Foundational NAD+ precursor. 14–16mg daily (RDA). Higher doses (50–100mg) possible but can cause flushing. Most cost-effective option.

Practical Protocol for Athletes

Tier 1 (Foundational): Adequate niacin intake (14–16mg daily minimum). Sleep greater than 7 hours. Resistance training 2–4 times per week. Mediterranean-pattern diet.

Tier 2 (Performance Optimization): NMN or NR supplementation (250–500mg NMN or 500–1,000mg NR daily). Taken morning with food for best absorption. Pair with comprehensive bloodwork to track NAD+/NADH ratios if available.

Tier 3 (Emerging): Combination protocols (NAD+ with resveratrol and exercise mimetics like AICAR). Limited human evidence; strong animal data.

What the Research Shows

Mouse and cell studies: NAD+ precursors improve endurance, reduce fatigue, and enhance mitochondrial function. Consistent across labs.

Human studies (limited): Small trials show improved recovery markers, sustained energy, and reduced soreness. Larger, longer trials needed for definitive athletic performance claims.

Realistic expectation: NAD+ supplementation works best as part of a comprehensive protocol (sleep, training, diet, bloodwork tracking). Standalone supplementation without optimized Tier 1 foundations shows minimal effect.

Clinical Integration at Tustin

For athletes running longevity protocols, NAD+ supplementation is assessed alongside baseline mitochondrial markers (CoQ10, carnitine, complex I/III/IV function if available), biological age testing (DunedinPACE tracks epigenetic response to protocols), recovery optimization (sleep, stress, acupuncture, herbal medicine for CNS recovery), and personalized dosing based on response and bloodwork trends.
